Our membership of the WBCSD provides a platform for our advocacy of more responsible business practices globally. We actively participate in WBCSD initiatives such as the 16 member Climate and Energy Cluster Board, where the focus is the Road to Paris: Business Solutions and Technologies towards a Low Carbon Economy. Our President and CEO, Henrik O. Madsen, is Co-Chairmanof the Vision 2050 Action 2020 project. In 2014, the CEO of DNVGL Energy, David Walker became a member of the WBCSD Climate and Energy Cluster Board where we participate in a number of the Business solutions.

Highlights

1. Climate and Energy Cluster Board, where we are part of the core group for 4 of the Business Solutions:

Resilience in global supply chains (DNV GL Strategic Research and Innovation)
  • GOAL: Holistic and cross-sectoral approach to building resilience in the global business community HOW: Drawing on practical experience from WBCSD member companies and their supply chains as case studies will provide the foundation 
  • WHO: This year the co-lead partners DNV GL and ERM have engaged with member companies (Coca-Cola, DuPont and Mitsubishi Chemical). 
  • WHAT: Two case studies and a first draft of a report have been produced. 
Electrifying cities towards Zero emissions (DNV GL Energy)
  • GOAL: Develop zero emissions roadmaps with up to 20 leading cities by 2020.
  • HOW: The Zero Emissions Cities business solution will bring the private sector and cities together to chart a roadmap towards zero emissions.
  • WHO: Arcadis, DNV GL, and Toshiba are co leaders. 
  • WHAT:The goal, scope of project, and type of ‘toolbox to develop’ have been defined and 6 Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities shortlisted, where DNV GL is in the lead for Amsterdam. 
Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (DNV GL Oil&Gas)
  • GOAL: For the oil, gas and utility industries to manage risks of stranded assets. Influence UNFCCC negotiating parties leading to COP21 in Paris.
  • HOW: The WBCSD working group will promote specific Business Solutions for the near term and advancement of technologies in mid/long-term. The focus is on creating PPPs to advance CCUS in key countries. 
  • WHO: Shell, Chevron, Statoil, Total and Veolia with DNV GL.
  • WHAT: A technology Roadmap with Barriers, Policy and Actions to be formulated through 4 Technology Roundtables. 
Scaling up renewables (DNV GL Energy)
  • GOAL: To contribute to decarbonizing the electricity mix by accelerating deployment of renewable energy to reach at least 30% of the electricity mix in 2030. 
  • HOW: Planned 2015 deliverables are a Survey analysis, factsheets, roundtables and a online tool. DNV GL is contributing to the system integration workstream. 
  • WHO: Other members in the core group include Acciona, CLP, EDF, GDF Suez, Statkraft, Veolia. Participants are E.ON, IKEA, EDP, Eskom, Total, ABB, Siemens.
  • WHAT: The achievements after joining the group in December 2014 have been to help define project scopeand draft a policy factsheet on transmission best practice. 
2. Human Rights Working Group membership 
  • GOAL: Clarifying the current status and ambitions of WBCSD member companies with regard to addressing human rights issues and operationalizing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).
  • HOW: In 2014, DNV GL co-led, with WBCSD, a global membership survey that was developed following DNV GL’s global business and human rights survey in 2013 ‘Understanding human rights risk’. 
  • WHAT: DNV GL presented a summary of this and related work at WBCSD’s Delegate Liaison meetings, at a Working Group meeting hosted by Nestle and at the Innovation Forum in December ‘14.
  • WHO: Nestlé, Vale, Michelin, The Coca-Cola Company, Hitachi, Novartis, Total, BP with DNV GL.
